ChatGPT Ads for Local Businesses: What They Are, What They Cost, and Whether to Try Them

If you use ChatGPT, you may have started seeing small sponsored boxes under some of its answers. Those are ChatGPT ads, and since May 2026 businesses of every size can buy them. That means a plumber, a salon, or a boutique can now pay to show up when someone asks ChatGPT a question about what they sell. This guide explains how the ads work, what they cost, and how to decide whether your business should try them.

What Are ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT ads appear below ChatGPT’s answer, clearly labeled and separate from it. According to OpenAI’s help center, each ad includes your business name, your logo, a headline, a short description, an image, and a link to your website.

OpenAI says advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. Your ad sits under the answer; it does not change what the answer says. OpenAI also says advertisers never see people’s conversations. You get combined reports on how your ads performed, not chat transcripts.

Not everyone sees ads. They show to people on ChatGPT’s Free and Go plans. People on the paid Plus, Pro, and Business plans do not see them, and neither do accounts belonging to anyone under 18. The audience is still large: OpenAI reported in October 2026 that ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week.

How ChatGPT Decides Which Ad to Show

If you have run Google Ads, you are used to picking keywords. ChatGPT ads work differently. The system looks at what the person is talking about, along with your ad’s headline, description, and landing page, and picks the ads it expects to be most relevant. When a person has ad personalization turned on, it can also use some signals from their wider ChatGPT use.

You can add “context hints,” which describe the topics and conversations where your business fits, such as “emergency AC repair” or “gift ideas for teachers.” OpenAI is clear that these are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee your ad appears in a particular conversation. They point the system in the right direction.

That makes the quality of your landing page more important than usual. If the page you link to clearly says what you do and where you do it, the system has more to work with.

What Do ChatGPT Ads Cost?

You can pay in one of two ways: by the thousand views, or by the click. Most local businesses will want to pay by the click, so you only pay when someone visits your site.

You set the most you are willing to pay per click, and an auction decides the actual price. For click campaigns, OpenAI recommends starting with a maximum bid of $3 to $5 per click. There is also a minimum daily budget, which depends on your account’s currency, and Ads Manager shows it when you set up a campaign.

To put that in perspective, if your clicks averaged $4 and you spent $20 a day, you would get about five visitors a day. Whether that is a good deal depends on how many of those visitors call or book, and what one new customer is worth to you. A new roofing job and a $12 sandwich are very different math.

One detail to know before you start: spend in your reports can lag 7 to 8 hours behind, so a report showing $0 does not mean nothing has been charged yet.

How to Get Started

OpenAI launched a self-serve Ads Manager in May 2026 and is opening it to more businesses gradually. Here is the basic setup:

  1. Sign up as an advertiser at ads.openai.com and add your payment information.
  2. Pick one service or product to advertise. A focused ad works better than one that tries to cover everything.
  3. Write your ad: a headline, a short description, an image, and the page on your website you want people to visit.
  4. Add context hints that describe the questions your customers ask before they buy.
  5. Set your budget and maximum bid, starting in the range OpenAI recommends.
  6. Set up tracking. At a minimum, add UTM tags to your link so your website analytics can show which visitors came from ChatGPT. OpenAI also offers a pixel for tracking calls, bookings, and purchases.

OpenAI reviews ads against its ad policies before they run and keeps ads away from sensitive conversations. If your business is in health, finance, or another regulated field, read those policies before you build anything.

Should Your Local Business Try ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT ads are new, and nobody has years of results to point to yet. That makes them worth a small test for some businesses and a pass for others.

They are worth testing if your customers research before they buy, a single new customer is worth a few hundred dollars or more, your website clearly explains what you offer, and you can tell where your leads come from. Contractors, home service companies, and businesses that sell considered purchases fit this well.

Wait if your Google Business Profile and website are not in good shape yet, you have no way to track calls or form fills, or your ad budget is already stretched. Fix the basics first. An ad that sends people to a confusing page wastes money on any platform. Our paid social campaign tips apply here too.

If you do test, keep it simple. Advertise one service, set a budget you are comfortable losing, run it for about a month, and compare your cost per lead with what you pay on Google or Facebook. That number will tell you more than any article can.

Ads Do Not Replace Being Part of the Answer

An ad sits under ChatGPT’s answer. The answer itself, including which businesses ChatGPT mentions by name, comes from what it can find and understand about you online, and you cannot buy your way into it. That free visibility still matters more for most local businesses. Here is how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and AI search, and how to tell if you are invisible to AI search right now.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do ChatGPT ads change what ChatGPT recommends?

OpenAI says no. Ads appear in a labeled space below the answer, and OpenAI states that advertising does not influence the answers ChatGPT provides.

Can a small business afford ChatGPT ads?

Yes. The early pilot was limited to large advertisers, but the self-serve Ads Manager is open to businesses of all sizes. You control your daily budget and your maximum bid per click.

Are ChatGPT ads better than Google Ads?

There is not enough history yet to say for local businesses. Google Ads lets you choose exact keywords and has years of data behind it. ChatGPT ads reach people in the middle of a conversation, often while they are comparing options. Test both with the same service and let your cost per lead decide.

  1. Hmm. It still seems so new! And I’m not in a position to run ads, but if I were, I think I’d try other platforms first. Maybe try ChatGPT after everything else is working.

    1. You do not need ads to show up in ChatGPT. Its regular answers draw on websites that clearly say what a business does and who it helps. The home page review you mentioned last week is a good place to start, Jeanine.

  2. Interesting read, Paul! I particularly like the distinction between paying for ad placement and earning organic recommendations. For small businesses, understanding that difference is essential before investing in yet another marketing channel.

    1. Tamara, an ad stops the day you stop paying, while an organic recommendation keeps working. Before spending anything, ask ChatGPT to recommend a business like yours and see if you already come up.

  3. Advertising sure has advanced from the days when we basically grew just from word of mouth! I like seeing some of the ChatGPT ads but the one thing I like to see are real photos of the people and what the offer instead of the AI photos.

    1. Photos of the people behind a business build trust in a way an AI image can’t, Martha. A simple phone picture of the owner or the finished work is usually enough. It is the closest an ad gets to word of mouth.
