Creating a Twitter Account:

If you are not one of the almost half a billion active users of Twitter, you can set up an account following these instructions:

  1. Sign up for a Twitter account:
First, you will need to sign up for a Twitter account using your email address or phone number. You will also need to provide your name and a password to create the account.
  2. Choose a username and profile picture:
Your username is the name that will appear on your profile and in your tweets. Choose a username that reflects your brand or personal identity and a profile picture that helps people recognize you or your brand.
  3. Customize your profile:
Once you have created your account, you can customize your profile by adding a bio, a header image, and a location. Your bio should briefly describe yourself or your brand and contain relevant keywords to help people find you on Twitter.

You can see that it is easy to get started – In another article, I will explain ways to optimize your profile and some other best practices.

Twitter Rules:

Twitter has a set of rules that all users must abide by when using the platform. Violating these rules can result in your account being suspended or permanently banned. Some of the most important rules will seem universal across other social media platforms (or even websites in general):

  1. Do not spam:
Twitter does not allow users to send unsolicited or repeated messages to others.
  2. Do not engage in abusive behavior:
Twitter has a zero-tolerance policy for abusive behavior, including harassment, hate speech, and threats.
  3. Do not post inappropriate content:
Twitter does not allow users to post pornographic or violent content or content that infringes on the rights of others.

A lot of people think that Twitter is just noise. It can seem that way since there is a lot of chatter – some good and some not so good. But with 350,000 tweets sent per minute and 500 million tweets sent daily, you need to be strategic and savvy to win (and hold) your audience’s attention and achieve your Twitter marketing goals.

I get it – I understand that Twitter can be confusing and overwhelming for some people, but it can also be a great tool for businesses to connect with their audience and build their brand. With that said, Twitter certainly has been, um, controversial in the past months (and that is putting it mildly – LOL! – so it is easy to ‘not get it.’)

    1. I totally understand why Twitter might seem intimidating at first, but with the right strategy and approach, it can be an incredibly valuable tool for businesses to connect with their audience and build their brand. Good luck testing it out, if that is what you are going to do.

  1. Paul, thanks for the outline of Twitter usage. I only tweet now and then, waiting for the Elon Musk ownership effect to shake out. Will I want to tweet ever again? We’ll see. Now: the number of followers of Elon vs. Barack– oh my! Fascinating. Thanks for a fun post.

    1. Who knows what is going to be the result of Twitter! With the banishing of accounts for life, only to have them reinstated… Employee layoffs for allegedly not agreeing with the new boss, Elon… Many folks have left. I try to stick to those people I like and follow.

    1. #2 – That is native to WordPress – it uses oEmbed to recreate the card – simply put a direct link to the post and it magically shows up that way.

#3 – Yes – I need to do that. The launch of the site was a smidge premature, and I wanted to get it out for the April UBC. I will get them added 🙂
